Micronix Advanced Capabilities: Cryogenic

Cryogenic Solutions

Cryogenic Rated Positioners

Micronix cryogenic motion stages are engineered for stable, repeatable positioning in ultra-low temperature environments down to 4 K. At these temperatures, material contraction, lubrication limits, and thermal mismatch can compromise alignment and position performance. Our designs address these challenges through careful material selection, matched thermal expansion, and friction management to maintain precision through thermal cycling.

Applications such as quantum computing, superconducting research, cryo-electron microscopy, and advanced device testing rely on precise motion to ensure system accuracy, repeatability, and sample integrity. Stable positioning at cryogenic temperatures delivers consistent results, protects delicate samples, and supports long-term reliability.

Built on over 20 years of motion expertise, Micronix PPS-20 and PPS-28 stages provide validated performance in cryogenic environments and can be configured to meet specialized system requirements.

PPS-Series Features:

  • Optimized for ultra-low temperatures <4 K
  • Travel up to 102 mm
  • Speed up to 3 mm/s
  • Maximum payload of 1 kg (horizontal orientation)
  • XYZ assembled orientations with custom bracketry
  • Open or closed-loop feedback down to 50 nm resolution
  • Linear encoder not susceptible to magnetic fields
  • Compatible with vacuum and non-magnetic environments

Structural Material Considerations for Thermal Stability

Materials and components are carefully selected to ensure precision, alignment, and reliable performance.

  • Piezo motor technology - integrated for smooth, reliable motion in cryogenic conditions
  • Ceramic bearings with no grease; optional dry lubrication
  • Titanium and ceramic components and hardware provide strength with minimal thermal expansion
  • Epoxy adhesives are formulated for cryogenic compatibility

Cryogenic Cabling and Connectors

Micronix’s standard offering includes Micro-D Sub 25 connectors for both encoder feedback and motor power, providing a compact and reliable solution for cryogenic positioning systems.

Alternative connector and cabling configurations are available upon request to meet specific chamber layouts or system requirements. All assemblies are built using controlled soldering practices to ensure long-term reliability and maintain connection integrity under thermal cycling.
